Welcome to Contemporary Art Practices and Creative Curriculum: Making Meaning in Public Places. In this course, contemporary artists and artist collectives will be introduced and examined as a means through which to consider pedagogical concepts, classroom teaching approaches, and curriculum design. During the course students will develop and produce individual and group works that will be presented in public spaces. Student artwork will provide another means through which to explore both art and teaching practices.

1. Group Situation

(40 points - Due: Tuesday July 7) Working collectively, students will design, orchestrate and document a group situation on campus. Specific project details and criteria will be provided in class.

2. Public Space Art Intervention

(80 points - Proposal Due: Wednesday July 8 at 9:30am and Intervention Documentation and Artist Statement Due: Friday July 10 at 9:30am) Working individually or with a partner or small group, students will design, undertake and document a public space art intervention on or off campus. Students will submit a project proposal by or before Wednesday July 8 at 9:30am that includes a succinct description (200 words) and outlines all conceptual and logistical considerations (participants, location, time frame, documentation strategy, safety and legal considerations, etc.). Students must also write a 250 word artist statement outlining the nature and goals of their public space art intervention and must present video (dv cameras are available for use - ask the instructors for details) and/or photographic documentation of their project in class.

3. Research Paper

(60 points - Due: July 24) The research paper option (2500-3000 words) offers students the opportunity to theorize their public space art intervention and present an argument through writing. Students should reflect on their own interventionist experiences in this class and analyze and critique its meaning/significance in relation to pedagogy, research, or curriculum. Students may wish to conceptualize their paper as a critical catalogue essay that theorizes their intervention using the literature and concepts studied in class.

Submission Procedure: Please submit completed papers to Carmen by or before 11:59pm MST on July 24th.

5. Daily Assignments and Personal Engagement

(20 points) Students are expected to regularly attend class and actively engage in ALL discussions, exercises, and activities. The course carries a heavy load and students are expected to complete all of the daily readings and homework assignments before the beginning of each class.
